Spoof calls can be frustrating! These cleverly disguised phone calls aim to dupe people into revealing personal information or sending money. But fear not, there’s good news! The Indian government is taking a stand against these international spoof calls. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) are working together to block these deceptive calls originating from outside India.
What are Spoof Calls?
Spoof calls use technology to manipulate the caller ID, making it appear like the call is coming from a legitimate source, such as a government agency, bank, or even a friend’s number. Scammers then use this fake identity to trick people into believing their threats or sob stories.
How is the Government Fighting Back?
The I4C and DoT are focusing on blocking spoof calls that falsely claim involvement from Indian law enforcement agencies like the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). These calls often threaten “digital arrests” to create panic and pressure victims into handing over money or personal details.
What Can You Do to Stay Safe?
Here are some tips to protect yourself from spoof calls:
- Be wary of unsolicited calls: Don’t trust caller ID blindly. If a call seems suspicious, especially one claiming urgency or legal trouble, hang up immediately.
- Don’t reveal personal information: Never share your bank details, social security number, or passwords over the phone, even if the caller seems convincing.
- Verify with official channels: If a call claims to be from a government agency or bank, contact them directly through their verified phone numbers or website to confirm the call’s legitimacy.
- Report spoof calls: You can report spoof calls to the authorities or your telecom service provider. This helps them track down the source and prevent future attempts.
By working together, the government and informed citizens can create a safer environment for everyone. Stay vigilant, and remember, if a call sounds too good (or bad) to be true, it probably is!
